Jul 12, 2017 - Starting with NicoNico in Japan, the Nintendo Switch is finally getting third-party apps. Is Netflix next? Nintendo Switch gets its first video streaming app: NicoNico. It isn’t quite Netflix or Youtube, but NicoNico is coming to the Switch. On July 13, Switch owners will be able to browse and watch.
Nintendo just put another nail in the Wii coffin. Nintendo is shutting down all video streaming services for the console at the end of January, according to Netflix.
Netflix's website lists Jan. 30 as the day support will end, with a representative confirming that date to CNET despite a previously reported customer service email posted to Reddit listing Jan. 31. The announcement on Netflix's website states:
'Unfortunately, Nintendo will suspend all video streaming services on Wii - including the Netflix Channel - after January 30, 2019 '
It looks like Nintendo is likely shutting down other streaming services for the Wii -- like Hulu and Amazon Video -- as well.

The Wii was a smash-hit in its heyday, selling over 101 million units. Although it's 12 years old, it's probably still floating around in plenty of homes -- and its ability to stream Netflix or Hulu has kept it relevant.
My old Wii is still plugged in at my parents' house as a dedicated Netflix machine. But once Nintendo takes away streaming, it may be time to retire my Wii forever.
Nintendo will still let you stream video on your Wii U, 3DS or Switch. Netflix isn't on the Switch yet, but you can use YouTube or Hulu instead.
Nintendo didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Netflix has since removed a tweet that said there were no plans for a streaming app.
The Nintendo Switch launched in March with no video streaming services whatsoever. Nintendo said this was because it wanted to focus on games and games alone for launch, and that strategy seems to have worked, as the console has sold incredibly well thus far. The video streaming service Hulu was added in November 2017 but Netflix is still nowhere to be seen. All hope is not lost however, as Netflix has now confirmed that it remains in discussions with Nintendo about bringing a Netflix app to the Switch...someday.
Does Nintendo Switch Have Netflix
'We are still exploring the opportunity with Nintendo, but don't have definitive plans to share at this time,' a Netflix spokesperson told Polygon.
Can Nintendo Switch Use Netflix
The Netflix support Twitter account recently alarmed some Switch owners when it tweeted about there being 'no plans' to launch a Netflix app on the hybrid console. That tweet has since been removed. The statement from Netflix is more open-ended and positive-sounding.
It seems like it is only a matter of time before Netflix comes to the Switch. Before the Switch was released, Nintendo executive Reggie Fils-Aime said the company was in discussions with Netflix and others to bring their services to the console.
The Nintendo Switch is the fastest-selling console ever in the US for its first 10 months. Worldwide, the system has now sold 7.63 million units, though this figure is only accurate as of September 30 so it does not include any holiday sales. Nintendo will update the sales figure when it reports earnings next, on January 31.
